hi davidwayne,

how are you doing? these last few poems of yours have reminded me of a mental exercise i started doing a few years ago, in an effort to recondition and fortify my self-perception. basically, the exercise involves making a conscious effort to address myself in the first person instead of the second person. i think by nature we're used to speaking to ourselves in the 2nd person, because that's how other people speak to us. this exercise helps me to think of myself as one person rather than two (or more).

if i may use your poem as an example? the sentiment that it expresses is perfect for the nature of the exercise. this is how the poem would sound if you change it from 2nd person to 1st person:

Poetman,
Why do I take...
This moment for granted?

Am I not the one,
Who gave it to me?
Why do I pass me by,
And my moment?

Now is the time to know,
I am The Moment!
A moment that is but once.
For I never look back.
I never return to it.
The moment I give me.

I hide in the shadows,
The other I am.
Looking at me,
For I know me.

I am always there waiting,
For I belong to me.
In that moment of time,
Called me (or called me!)

Poetman,
I loved me then,
And I love me now.
In that moment of time,
Which is forever mine.

this is an ongoing exercise for me, and i still do address myself in the 2nd person from time to time, but i have found that the deliberate change in language has definitely helped me improve my self-image and self-acceptance. i wanted to share the technique in case anyone else wants to give it a try.
