Subject: New Life
On our recent holiday in Wales we came across a strange person. He lived in a large house near to our holiday home and on his gate was the following sign:

WILLIAM LEWIS: THE LORD'S REPRESENTATIVE IN THE WORLD.

THROUGH HIS HEALING HANDS HE HAS THE POWER TO MAKE THE DEAF HEAR, THE BLIND SEE, THE LAME WALK, AND BRING THE DEAD BACK INTO NEW LIFE.

My daughter met him on a walk, and had a long talk with him. Apparently he said that he could indeed do these things, but that the effects didn't last, people tended to relapse after a while.

Cheers, egobsmacked.

"bringing the dead back into new life" could probably be construed a number of different ways. i'd be curious to know if he really believes he can resurrect the dead, or if perhaps the phrase has some other obscure meaning involving communication through spirit mediums or something like.

metaphors are such squirrely little things.

on the subject of faith healing - do you think it's actually possible for a faith healer to give sight to a blind person or make a lame person walk? or is it all just a bunch of hokey? what do you guys think?

Hi Lib,

Well spotted. The word 'new' seems to be the weasel word.

We were more interested in how Mr Lewis could have the stunning amount of self confidence to make these claims. Also, Wales is a country which takes it's religion very seriously and he was living in a Cathedral city. Talk about being controvertial.

He admitted to us that the local people didn't like him very much!

Faith healing? Well, the hard evidence for recoveries isn't there of course, so I guess we are thinking about some metaphorical effects, or coincidences. Who can say?

Cheers, ecynical

i like the idea that he can bring people back from the dead, but it doesn't last long. smiling face

he hasn't made a single claim that the new testament doesn't ascribe to jesus of nazareth. infact, that's all he claims. i wonder if he ever would have thought of it by himself, if he had never heard of the christian empire? but then, if he were to speak to people in words that were more or less his own, or foreign to the pop culture of his surrounds, then how would anyone know what he was on about? this is where starjade fails to communicate to the populi; he uses his own idiomatic dialect. wink

if his faith healings work initially, yet wear off after the recipient (note i don't say patientwink) ceases contact with the faith healer, then this fellah is indeed the vestibule of said faith and the font of the healing. i wonder if regular visits would maintain the healing?

then there is the metaphor thing. THROUGH HIS HEALING HANDS HE HAS THE POWER TO MAKE THE DEAF HEAR (reason), THE BLIND SEE (reason), THE LAME WALK (find meaning for the disillusioned), AND BRING THE DEAD BACK INTO NEW LIFE (overcome depressive illness). that's one of the ways that many people read the new testament's claims. yet you're saying that he claims literal success, yes? i'd like to see that, e.
