Subject: Spam
Moderators,

FYI, I just deleted 5 spam messages from the Thinking Spot, belonging to kavintrade, the latest member to the forum.

I did send him or her a PM advising that no spam or otherwise commercial advertising is permitted on the forum without the specific consent of the administrator (which I assume he or she didi not have, otherwise there is egg all over my face).

Cheers,

Rudi

hi rudi,

thanks for the heads up. i've occasionally made exceptions for those who are contributing to a legitimate discussion in which their wares are relevant (like lawrence in the foreign language dubs thread, for example), but generally speaking this is a place for discussion, not advertising. i banned kavintrade. (in the future, feel to drop me a PM if you delete any spam messages so i can go ahead and ban the person.)

thanks,

Lib,

Do we have a "terms of use" that people can review before joining and posting. Not that I would ever want to discourage anyone from joining... and you, as much as anyone else, are well aware of my adversity to censorship and preventing freedom of expression, but would it not make sense through such "terms of use" to indicate to people that spamming/advertsing is not permitted unless there is some specific consent from you?

What do you think?

Rudi

Thank you Rudi for deleting those Spam’s cos I felt a bit suspicious as well, since I left a germen Forum for the same reason. Although I must say this was harmless stuff here apart from those countless porn webs which the admin had to delete every night.

Well done Rudi

Let's get rid of the s****

True... not good for a mode to have forgotten this... blush

How about being a little more explicit on the spam/commercial advertisement part (right now spam is just part of that first list and commecial advertising, per se, is not mentioned at all). I don't know if that would really stop anyone who is intent on advertising, but at least the more explicit it is the less anyone can complain of unfair disciplinary action.

Just a thought...

Cheers,

Rudi

hi rudi,

in all honesty, i don't believe spammers even bother to look at the terms of use. there is no hard and fast rule against advertising. as i mentioned, people have been permitted to advertise in their posts as long as they are also contributing to a discussion, and that doesn't really bother me. people also put advertising in their signature lines and profiles, and that doesn't bother me, either. spam, on the other hand, is a very specific thing, and spammers make it clear up front that they're not here for conversation. i like to keep the terms of use as short and simple as possible. thanks for the suggestion, though.
