Subject: intro to using this forum
a few items off the top of my head...

navigation buttons:

options = edit profile and other preferences
pm = manage your private messages
search = locate posts and threads using search criteria
new = list new threads (not to be confused with 'new topic')

clicking the couch logo at the top of each page will take you to the couch forum homepage.

when you go to edit a post, you may put in an explanation for your edit (this is optional).

my first order of business is to see about expanding the smilies collection.

please feel free to share your questions, suggestions and comments on using and customizing the board. oh, and please report any bugs you come across.

thanks!

if you include a url in your post, prefaced by http://, the forum will automatically convert it to a clickable link.

a quick note on posting images:

1) find a website that will host your image.

2) upload the image to the website.

3) find out the URL of the actual image. you can test the URL by pasting it into the 'address' box of your browser - make sure the link actually works, and displays the image by itself.

4) to display the image in your post, paste the image link (the URL) into your post, preceded by [ i m g ] and followed by [ / i m g ] (remove the spaces). these are special "WSN codes" that tell the page to display the image specified by the link enclosed.

here is an example:

[ i m g ] http://www.thecouchforum.com/attachments/youarehere.jpg [ / i m g ]

again, remove the spaces when actually using the codes.

p.s. avatars do not need to be hosted on another server. as long as the avatar is the appropriate size (100 x 100 pixels or less, and less than 50Kb filesize), you can upload it directly to the forum from your hard drive. to do so, go through the 'options' button at the top of the page to manage your profile.

if you have an image you would like to use for an avatar but it exceeds the file restrictions, i can help with editing the image to the appropriate size if you need it.

a little FYI about editing the size of photos:

you can resize images with microsoft photo editor which is the default image editor for XP (default meaning that if you double-click the image from wherever it's saved, it will open with that program). if you go to image/resize, you can change the drop-down menu to 'pixels' instead of 'inches, and then specify the number of pixels - 100 maximum height or width if it's going to be an avatar - and save the image before trying to upload it as an avatar.

if all else fails, you're welcome to email me the avatar and i can upload it for you.

If you've got PHP 4.3+, it should have GD bundled with it and so you could turn on the automatic avatar resizing option.

ok, e. (and everyone else too, natch) -

the auto-resize feature is switched on now, so you shouldn't have any more difficulties trying to upload avatars.

thanks paul!
