This would have summed up your post, but much more briefly.

True. But sometimes it becomes necessary to negate many things in order to draw a picture of something which cannot be drawn in a positive way. smiling face

I think it would be better to say 'I am not proud'(than 'I am not')--but that might make one assume I am proud of being not proud and so on.

enough of 'I' let 'you' take over. laughing

'I am not' would sound like a Zen riddle or existential statement from someone who is a Buddhist.

I would prefer "I am" and "You Are", I tend to avoid the negative whether it be from the Buddhist, Christian, Atheist, or any other system of thought. I believe there is much that is good in the world and many who are good.

I think you are right about the "I am not" being of Buddhist influence. I read a lot about Buddhism many years ago, and it helped my clarify my own Christianity. I attend a Lutheran church, but I am very careful what I say and who I say it to. You might say I've learned to keep my head down on certain subjects. But this is the nice thing about the internet, if the other person is civil, and willing to listen, I can post things I would never say face to face.

I have been on discussion forums since 2008; not a long time and not many forums. Mad Philosophers forum which collapsed prior to my joining this one was an active forum but an unmoderated environment. This forum had quite an impact on my thought process and I consider it a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas with fellow members.

But...as goes with everything else..there is a negative side...you might have observed it already. Discussions start with something and they drift in another direction and then they become another thing ending up in ad hominems and banning of members throwing insults upon each other.

I have been part of many such threads in the past...it's alright to drift..we all are entitled to our opinions and in the end they are just that-- 'opinions;' why get so attached to them! But when we start insulting each other or argue aimlessly round the clock it sucks our life force energy and renders us a wreck. Arguing face to face or over the net consumes almost equal amount of energy in my opinion.

I learnt from a few fellow members to post once or twice our difference of opinion on subjects and then keep mum if the other party is too heavily relying on hesh ideas--I don't think that I have been consistent but I find this approach good.

I've been on forums since 2006 and I am registered on a lot, most I don't even look at any more. I usually find something interesting, register, and then find less of interest than I had originally expected. Or I post something that gets an extremely negative and hostile reaction, and I just let it alone, some things are just not worth fighting about, or they are no longer fun. There are only a few forums that I am still active on, this happens to be one of them.
