Subject: Not For The Faint Of Heart...
The Topic I wish to post is "Not For The Faint Of Heart. If you are having a happy day, don't read it. If you are on a upper, and everything is going beautiful for you, don't read it. Why? Because the subject may be construed as morbid. And what is the subject you may ask? Well this is it: Is there in the human genome what may be considered the "The Death Gene." A gene that would predispose the human species to self destruct. Here, I am not talking about aging or mortality, but something else. For instance, in physics to create a fission or fusion reaction, the atomic element used must reach critical mass, and then the reaction occurs. The reaction can be controlled, as in an atomic power plant to generate energy, or left uncontrolled as in an atomic or nuclear detonation, thereby releasing all of its energy ranging from infrared radiation (heat) up to gamma rays, the most lethal. Does the human species in its genome have the potential to reach "critical mass," and thereby self destruct? The analogy using nuclear energy, coincidentally, would be the agency to cause human life to cease, to self destruct. Has life on planet earth reached its zenith? From the invention of the wheel, to landing a man on the moon, let alone splitting the atom, does it bode well or ill for the human race? Only time will tell.... Wenthworth (By the way, there's no ecstasy in this Topic)

Sorry to burst your bubble but your topic is not nearly as distressing as you seem to think. If there is a "Death Gene" I think that would be great news, because if it exists it can be manipulated, altered, or controlled. Normally there are genes that control all the functions of the body and one of these functions is growth. The genes that control growth are turned on and off by other "controller genes". There may be a death gene that comes into play after so many years, and if this is so, that gene could be blocked or turned off. I have also heard that certain cells in the body will divide and grow to replace cells that have been damaged or died, and these cells have a limited number to times that they can divide before they loose the ability to repair and heal. It could be that instead of a death gene, the genes simply wear out after so many divisions and stop being viable.

To: theDoc. Your post did not break any bubbles, but did bring to the fore some interesting questions. In essence, your post indicated that if a Death Gene exists if could be alter by scientists, using the most advance technology. And using this knowledge, other genes could be altered to help the cause of research, to help change the face of modern medicine. Let's go for it! Sincerely, Wentworth

As I said elsewhere, on the same subject (altering genes to better man): muck around with your fundamentals as you like, but stay the hell away from me...I like myself 'as is'.

It's one of those films that really makes you think about genetic engineering.
Anyway so what do you think with advances in technology should we optimise humans, and if not why not? And what are the caveats therein?)

Once the particular human is optimized, what is done with them? Are they assigned to the specific job for which they have been prepared? If it was their choice OK, otherwise it's just glorified slavery. And it is still slavery if the individual does not have the option of leaving that situation and trying something different.

It may be that in enhancing one quality you diminish another or several. What are you willing to give up to get what you think you want. Would you be willing to not feel any emotion in order to live a long time?

Are you familiar with Gnostic world view Sunlight? How do you think Satan acts in us?

I would be very much surprised if Sunlight admits to any association with the Devil, which makes him fertile ground for the Devil to do the Devils work.

I had Gattacca on my list for some time. After viewing this comment I hastened into watching it. I think I liked the movie but not much. The natural God-child did beat the genetically engineered children after all for what it's worth!
