Subject: Ridicule
What is it with people who persist in making fun of others. It seems like that is their idea of cleverness, and in doing so makes them slightly superior to the other person. Most of the time the things they say aren't very funny as they are the only ones laughing. It often gets to the point that the really good sophisticated humor goes unappreciated. Growing up, almost everything I tried to say was met with someone trying first to make a joke out of it, and then dismissing it. Even now there are some who can't carry on a conversation without trying to put the other person down in some way. To me it does not indicate cleverness or wit, but a lack of sophistication and respect. I suspect that most people don't even realize how they are degrading themselves and demonstrating their lack of intelligence and civility.

Youtube Comments are the worst, it goes without saying. It appears that for a lot of people are looking for an emotional ride, so to speak, and the way to get there is to insult others to get a reaction. The needs of the troll are not too far off from the needs of a human being though; it is about the power of getting people's attention by insult rather than genuine interest in whatever is being discussed.

What I just said is either obvious and or not very interesting, but maybe if I were to say something controversial, terrible or insulting everyone would be outraged enough to respond.

Why is it that the obvious and mundane are not worthy of conversation but the controversial and insulting garner more responses. I am much more interested in exchanges about what some may consider trivial, than I am in pushing my ideas through a torrent of abuse.

I don't know really but it is a good question. There could be biological basis for why we might pursue the feelings behind conflict.

Given that gratuitous sex and violence is the bulk of entertainment these days and popular politics charges up the passions of every Tom, Dick and Sarah, there must be a reason why we indulge in all of this, letting go of reason to feel some kind of empty pleasure in being aggressive or reactionary.
