Subject: Of Humankind and Stupidity
www.collegehumor.com/post/6...ive-learned-from-tlc-shows

The above is a link to a typical article on collegehumor.com. The website is aimed at audiences typically 18 and older and provides me with some comedic relief. This is all well and good. Laughing is healthy, after all.

So, why is it that people are using the comments section as means to spew hate and ignorance? You get a couple typical comments about the actual comedic article and the rest of them are bashing each other for not believing in whatever the poster believes. The original post didn't even mention religion. It mentioned slightly related topics, but not religion itself or the name of any religion.

Seems to me, people are looking for reasons to be angry and hateful. I can't see that as anything but stupid.

I don't care what your beliefs are. If you treat me like your equal, regardless of whether you actually believe me to be, then we're good. You can be sure I'll do my best to treat you like my equal.

I'm agnostic. So the heck what? Some of us are Christians. Other lean towards Judaism or Islam. Others still lean into eastern faiths like Buddhism, Jainism, Taoism, and Hinduism. Then there's those of faiths that center around the Earth.

Why does it matter that we're different? I know that a big thing with Christianity seems to be that Christians feel they need to save us non-Christians... but I don't get it. Yea, I'm not Christian and I don't care to be one, but I grew past the part of trying to convert Christians a while ago. Partly out of respect for them and their beliefs, partly in hopes that they'll not try to convert me in return, but mainly because even I don't like my Agnosticism. I'm not happy like this, but I do, to a great extent, feel I need it for me. I was also much less happy as a Christian.

Meh... whatever. I want people to love and be loved. I want to love and be loved. It kills me that we hate each other for being different.

Some people are just looking for a fight, and they don't care what they fight about or with who. It's a learning curve, on most forums it takes some time to learn who to ignore and most forums have some kind of 'Ignore' function so you don't even need to see those individuals.

Different? I like different, it would be very boring if everyone were the same, have the same likes and dislikes. I like Blonds, Redheads, Brunets, Black hair, even some Grey Haired old ladies still look good. But that's just me, a D O M.

Your religion should be whatever you are comfortable with, I have certain beliefs, but I don't 'Know' that they are true, I believe them, that's why it's faith.

Also I do not agree with the idea that proof destroys faith, I can believe something and even if I have proof, I can still believe, and have faith that it is true. Proof is not the destroyer of faith, belief, or religion, that is just something atheists invented to put doubt in the minds of believers.

Nice thread, Kinaoko.

Youtube commentary is often inexplicably hateful but I believe it merely indicates how fed up people are with the kind of lives they lead. They are tired and weary of being pushed around by their own fears and haphazardly reflect those forces (their own fears) in their targeted criticisms.

It is almost Karmic in a manner of Newton's third law (misapplied here of course): "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction", whether that is punching a stranger in the face, running around naked at a public beach, cutting my dangle off (god forbid), eating only cheesy potatoes for decades, not saving for retirement, et cetera.

So who will lead the way into light, and the defeat of stupidity, certainly not by condemning everyone to hell. Jesus didn't do that.

Why is it that so many self-affirmed Christians carry Anti-Christ(ian) beliefs? It's mind shatteringly bat wacky.

Agreed, but it's more difficult than you might think. Did you ever try to quit smoking?

Well, we could try to assess your analogy here.

Smoking is a habit that poses a risk to health.

Faith is a complex issue we might be able to reduce to habits. Some would say the reward for practicing a moral life (in accord with the institutional laws of said faith) is the motivation for living such a life. Some would avoid eternal damnation while others would be drawn to the allure of heaven.

Comparatively in this analogy, the risk to health (of smoking) is to the consequence of being unable to live a Christian life. Abiding by pleasure denying rules is tough and both may include giving up what one desires.

Eh, I was going to go on but I feel silly all of a sudden...

My idea of a contradictory Christian is summed up but the popular meme "Republican Jesus" wherein the son of Christianity is the very opposite in character.

And here we are, so blessed as to have our own false prophet among us. Sunlight (AKA Bible Thief) constantly spouts the false teachings of the church leaders in the centuries following Christ. It's a pity that he can't go back and discern the true message of Jesus from the corruption of the church in the years following the deaths of those who actually heard Christ's message first hand. 'Women should keep silent in church', is nonsense, Jesus never tried to silence women, women were the first to encounter the risen Christ and take the message back to the men of the group. Sunlight (AKA Bible Thief) is the false teacher of today, misreading the Bible he stole from his girlfriend.
