Subject: Child criminals
If a child commits rape or murder, should the parents be held accountable? Should they receive a lesser sentence or be tried as an adult? Should their record be sealed when they turn 18?

Personally, I'm in favor of not sealing the record. Not sure the value of holding the parents accountable, although I've heard it argued that cases of severe abuse from the parent may account for the criminal behavior. What about holding parents accountable when children commit theft or destruction of property?

As for a lesser sentence, it seems fair to take their age into account but it also seems fair to allow a prosecutor to petition the court for the child to be tried as an adult if they demonstrate sufficient awareness of what they were doing.

Any thoughts?

There are so many variables here that it would be impossible to have one set of guidelines and expect it to cover everything. When I taught Jr. HS I encountered some students who were very responsable and some who were totally irresponsable, and everything in between. Parents who would take responsablity for thier children and parents who wanted nothing to do with their children (thankfully a rare case). In one resturant I worked in the manager came through one evening, saying 'Gipsy Patrol' and went out into the resturant to keep an eye on things. It seemed one child would distract the help while the others stole things. In a case like that both the parents and children should have been tried and held accountable. It mostly comes down to attitude and history, if it's a one time first offence (Other than violent crime) the courts could go easy and hope for the best, repete offenders should be delt with in an appropriate manner.
