Subject: Can't stand the silence
Another miscellaneous observation of curiosities of human behavior.

Working in a doctor's office, I spend a large part of the day on the phone. Many times people will call and ask a question, and rather than pause to wait for an answer, they will keep talking, often repeating the same thing over and over again, either forcing you to interrupt them or going on at length to a seemingly absurd degree in order to (I assume) avoid allowing any dead silence on the phone.

It also happens that someone will ask a question, and I will say something like "Please give me a moment to login to my computer schedule", which again will prompt them to make small talk to fill the silence. Of course I've seen this behavior happen in person as well, where people will nervously avoid silence.

It seems evident of a terrible state of anxiety.

True.

And sometimes it's simply because people are scared of getting disconnected and not knowing for a minute or two about that---that is why they need incessant feedback--even if it's from their own voice.

It seems to me people hate silence, perhaps because silence promotes introspection which most folks hate even more.

Personally: I wish folks would shut the hell up...don't really give a shit if they 'listen'...just be quiet for a while

laughing When my grandson was born 7 years ago he had a brother 4 years older that I took care of as well. He was a chatterbox, about 3 years ago my grandson started talking and he took over for his older brother. Now my grandaughter has started talking and now I'm good for several more years. Young children always have something to say except when they are asleep, that is nice peace and quiet. Chattering seems to be born into people.

I like it when kids chatter...not so keen on the noise vomited up by adults.
