Subject: The game of chicken
For those not familiar with this (American?) tradition, basically it involves two people driving toward each other on the vehicle of their choice (bicycle? motorcycle? car? truck? tractor?), full speed ahead toward head-to-head collision to see which of them will "chicken out" first, or in other words turn off the road to avoid collision. Presumably if neither of them chickens out, they both wind up dead? Not sure the details of how that's supposed to work, as I've only ever seen it on television and in movies where inevitably, someone does chicken out and the one who doesn't is regarded a victor.

What is this game about really? Bravery? Showing off? Suicidal impulses?

The idea has been rolling around in my head for a while now that maybe it's some kind of subconscious test of karma or fate. Sort of like Russian Roulette for 2 players.

Any thoughts?

I think 'chicken' is the unnatural outlet for the natural (but blunted) impulse to compete.

Ha, I think you're both right. I'm guessing too that the participants don't actually believe that they are dueling to the death. I'm sure they figure someone is going to chicken out first.

Much of international politics reminds me of "chicken" - Brinksmanship, anyone?

It is very curious that while most individuals outgrow these impulses, which are usually typical of adolescence, the leaders of nations seem to still be playing these games. Unfortunately, we are all in the backseat!
