Subject: Why science can't replace religion
One of my social media friends posted this link along with the following introduction which I wholeheartedly agree with:

"Let me start by saying that a person's religious beliefs (or lack thereof) are highly personal, and I will not judge a person's spiritual and religious journey (or lack thereof) so long as they don't try to use their beliefs to harm others or try to convince me that their beliefs are the only correct ones. That said, when people (whether religious people who say that observed science can't be true because of a religious text, or atheists who mock religious beliefs because everything should be rational) say that science and religion are incompatible, I get a little stabby. This article helps to explain why."

a quote from the article:

"Sarewitz is saying that certain needs unique to the human condition cannot be satisfied by science alone. Scientists who prefer a strictly rationalist lens have a hard time accepting this.

[...] But a response that indicts all religion as a stain on humanity is equally absolutist. It is also inconsistent with the spirit of science."

I would have to disagree with the extremes on both sides, science and religion do not address the same questions, and therefore are compatable so long as you know which questions you are asking. Science answeres very specific, narrowly framed questions with very specific answers. For example science can describe the structure of an atom, or tell us the distance to a particular star. Mythology/Religion can tell us what our relationship is to the creator of the atom and the Universe. For example what caused the Big Bang? - God. God created the universe and man, and evolution is how God did it. Science can tell us how evolution progressed and religion can tell us why, but the language of science is very clear and well defined, the language of Mythology/Religion is symbolic and no longer understood. The Native American who would point to a particular Messa, and say this is where a particular mythic event happened, is wrong. Mythology/Religion is not about specific events and places, but the Mythology tells a story that took place, not even on every Messa, but on the essential idea of a a Messa. In Buddhism they contemplate the essense of things, perhaps a chair, but they seek not to understand the essense of a particular chair, but the essense of all chairs, the idea that is common to all, the non-dualistic concept of a chair. The Garden of Eden was not a particular place, but everywhere where man became aware of his own humanity, and where every man will become aware of his or her humanity. Some never do, and have no Eden, or humanity. But for others, with the understanding of who they are comes the realization that the Universe is their Eden.

Perhaps science can paint a picture of the Universe, but Religion supplies the colors.
