Subject: Active military
Is it worthwhile for a country to maintain an active military?

Any thoughts?

Yes. A domestic military force that serves as emergency services and provides opportunities for people to work and train and gain practical skills. It need not be a large force, though. Local militias should also exist to bolster ranks in times of war or crisis. A military should not be big enough to take command of the entire country, for instance. How that might be determined is anyone's guess.

i'm not keen on the idea of local militias myself. they seem a little scary to me, what i've seen of the ones that actually exist here in the U.S.

but still, i think respecting and allowing their existence helps prevent the government from tending naturally toward totalitarianism.
