Subject: about somebody that I used to knwo
It was on a Friday afternoon that he arrived in the city. An overcast sky over Berlin seemed to be announcing his arrival and the things to come. Walking out of the house, I stopped for a second and thought about going back in and locking myself inside for as long as it would take, before he stopped looking for me. I just wanted to get under my covers, spend the whole day in bed and never have to face him. A few steps away my fear turned into an eager wish to see him and embrace him...
A few more steps....

I caught my breath,
There he was,
He turned and smiled and we exchanged polite hellos, but my head was spinning, it was only a few minutes but it seemed an hour. then he said "It's been nice to see you, but I've got an appointment."
As he turned to go, I cried out "Wait! . . . . .

...then pulled the straight razor from my pocket. His eyes first evidenced surprise, then resignation.

"I thought we'd settled all that,' he said, his body relaxing as though to accept the inevitable. I stepped forward and raised the razor...

He slowly backed up as I brandished the razor in front of him.
He sunk into resignation of his oncoming fate.
A few times he appeared to be about to speak, but faltered knowing my expertise with this particular weapon, mesmerized by the blade.
Finally, backed into a corner with no place to run he cried out, "Please . . ."
Cooly I said, "How many times have I told you to get your eyes checked, you need new glasses. Do you even have a mirror in your bathroom?"
He seemed to wilt, I continued, "Those sideburns are way off, and you really need to get better light so you can shave under your neck. Now hold still I don't have any tissue, and you don't want to go to the meeting looking like this."
I quickly trimmed things up and got him looking at least half way presentable.
"Now when you get to the meeting, remember . . . . "

Lucky for you that worked out oK, by the way how are the wife and kids?
We really need to do more than Christmas cards once a year.
About the meeting, there is a lot riding on this deal so we don't want to lay out our intentions right off.
So let them propose their 'Buy Out' offer before we . . . .

The Resturant was quiet, the food was good, while we shared photos of our families we went over the details of the rather succesful meeting. They were expecting a hostile takeover, but got firm orders that could really put them back on their feet if they managed it right.
I had to excuse myself, the daughter would soon need tucked in and there was a red-eye on his scheduel before long. Something told me it wouldn't be nearly so long before I saw him again.

You would think a shipping company would be hiring clerks with ledgable handwriting. So our people got a container of fertilizer and there is a container of parts and other stuff is being dropped somewhere in Afghanistan. One good thing the fertilizer is going to some local farmers and not blowing something or someone up. I really wish I knew why Interpool is so interested in what was in my container. Couldn't have been my stuff, what are they going to do with parts for toys?

That's the one thing i hate about L.C.L. if the other shipment gets hijacked you're S.O.L. Maybe I can hurry up the 2nd shipment and save the contract?

*elsewhere*

An iron-nickel rock, a kilometer in length on the long axis, tugged out of an already eccentric orbit by thousands of years of Sol's unceasing pull, makes its way across the black, cold, gulf to an intersect point with Earth.

In six months by human reckoning: Doomsday.

What the hell is going on?
First Interpool is interogating me about the container, and now NASA, ESA, and even China is kicking down my door wanting to know if my controls will work in deep space. How the hell should I know they're toys.
Something is going on and I don't know what.

Now both plants have been hijacked by some secret Gov. nonsense for something they can't tell me about.
And the second shipment was almost ready to go.

Oh, the container didn't go to afghanistan, it was confiscated by someone, but at least they payed good for it, even the lost production on the other end.

Damn, I wish I knew what was going on, well everything should be Ok in a few months.

With all this windfall lately I think I'll take a cruse this summer, I'd better start looking and booking now, don't want to wait till the rush 6 months from now.

Wow, there is a lot of crazy stuff on the news lately, something about detonating A-bombs on an asteroid to keep it from hitting something?

Well at least production is back on track, we should be good to hit the next Christmas season, just hope the buyers have their hands on their pocketbooks. Maybe I can retire to an island somewhere, if there are any left after the oceans rise from this global warming nonsense.

Fragmented, splintered, along fault lines by atomic hell, the iron-nickel rock was no more.

What slept inside that ancient rock (once named R'lyeh by madmen and dreamers), tickled awake by fission, turned its awareness toward Earth.

Cthulhu was going home...

Cthulhu slowly roused herself from the long slumber, memories began to come back. She had found the perfect nest and burned her way in and had just sealed herself in for the waiting when the sudden shock startled her into stillness. Then the cold and she knew she had to wait even more.

Now she was free of her would-be coffin and was going home.

Memories of dreams while sleeping, dreams of madman and other strange happenings that were beyond her understanding. As the memories came and went she became more aware of distant home approaching, she slowed down to more carefully pick where to land, needed to be a place secluded and away from the others. Stretching, remembering, It would be good to be back among her own kind, but how long had she slept, a few days, one moon cycle, a full season? No matter, it will be good to be back with her mate, who always knew the best places to find food. The A-bombs were just a snack, barely enough to whet her appetite, she could sense food there, and she was hungry, very very hungry.

Damn, Now isn't just peachy keen, in the middle of my vacation and these crazy scientists say everyone needs to go home. I just hope they are going to reimburse me for the rest of my cruse, Damn'it I think I'll sue.

Well at least I can go to my Island, cause that is now home, but it was a close thing they still wanted everyone on the mainland. It helps to have important friends. Well the island will be a good thing, away from everyone and everything, nice and secluded, no-one to bother me, just get some rest for a change.

Ahh, good to be home, friends laughed when I bought this island, everyone said "When the sea level rises there won't be an Island", but I had picked this one especially because it was mountainous, and rocky, no-one else wanted it. The sea could rise 30 feet and it would still be out of the water and well away from everything. And then there is that one big hill on the other side, you can see where the ground has slid away it's more like a rock, a big rock, and all redish in color. I've seen some caves there too, that will be fun to explore. Ahh, now to just settle in and relax a little, I'll do some exploring later.

Cthulhu approached home, but something didn't feel right, someone or something was watching her, she could feel it. Speed up a little a few quick turns and now, disappear! She felt a lot of excitement, no it was panic whoever had been watching her could no longer find her, well she needed to get back to finding food and a place to wait. Slowly circleing lower and lower, there! and its out away from most of those other little creatures, she was really getting hungry now and if she didn't eat soon she wouldn't be the only one starving to death.

There burn this open and there's the food, several packages. eat one now and take some along. 'Wow this is really rich, never had food this strong, before it was always mixed'.

Now there are several of those little creatures running around making a lot of noise, they couldn't see Cthulhu but they could see the metal canasters seemingly floating in air, 'I'd better hide them' she thought, Oops! knocked one down, 'What are they' she picked one up to look at it, it writhed and screamed for a few seconds and then went still and quiet. 'Nothing I'm interested in' she thought, 'and I have more important things to do', She put it down, all the others had run away screaming, 'I'd better not come back here again, too much noise'.

Now what? I finally got the radio set up and ther's a big stink over in the middle east, The Iranians are accusing the Israelis of steeling several canisters of enriched Unarium. Just another lame excuse to start a war, well at least it won't bother me that's on the other side of the world.

I think I'll go and explore that big hill on the other side of the island, still cant figure out what it is. It just looks big and red, like rust? And how did I loose a cave, it was pretty big and seemed too clean inside, but now I can't find the entrance and the rock was really warm where I thought the entrance was. Caves just don't melt away, do they?

Cthulhu was settling into her nest remembering finding the perfect place, she was up high looking and here was the island out away from everything else. And then there it was, the prefect place a nickel-iron rock, just big enough. Cleaned out the cave opened it up a little and seal herself in to wait. Plenty of food, more excitement getting the others, Glad to be away from all those little creatures, much too noisy.
Pease and quiet, and wait.

Cthulhu was waiting and resting in the dark and quiet, puzzling over home, it was not as she remembered. She hadn't found any of her own kind, where were they? Are they hiding? or did they go off looking for her? And nothing was where she remembered it to be, there are mountains where there were none, forests in all the wrong places, nothing is right, something is wrong. How long had she slept? She'd need to sort it out later, for now just rest, and wait.

Oh well so much for peace and quiet, now this island is crawling with sciency and military types trying to tell me I have to leave. No way this is my home, private property and it's mine, but I did say they could look around if they leave me alone.
I was going to go back and explore the rock but then they got really excited and said it was too dangerous, it was hot. Well yes I said when I felt it the other day it was very warm probably from the Sun shining on it. But 'No' they said they ment 'hot' as in radioactive hot. Good thing I didn't spend too much time in the cave, but they said I couldn't have been inside a cave in the rock, there's no trace on me as if I hadn't been anywhere near radioactivity. Well it's a good thing there are a couple of small mountains between me and the rock. They said they tracked the radioactivity from satelites and that is why they are here looking for a new source of ore, I could be rich, better check my deed for mineral rights.

Funny thing, when I asked how things were developing in the middle east, they got real evasive and cagy and didn't give any straignt answers. Well those military types think everything is a secret and the scientists don't know anything outside of a test tube.

Somewhere in a very secure meeting somewhere under the Alps a General addresses a group of scientists and military leaders from several countries.
"Gentlemen, thankyou for being here, I don't think I need to stress the importance of the subject. I will now turn the meeting over to our lead scientist."

"Thankyou, well this is what we know so far, and there is much that we don't know, so any ideas are welcome at this point.
As you know we were tracking a large asteroid that had been perturbed out of orbit and was on a collision course with Earth.
The operation to use a-bombs to break it up and deflect the pieces was entirely successful.
Then one of the larger fragments abruptly changed course and headed directly for Earth.
We tracked it but were having some difficulty identifying exactly what it was, it didn't seem to be a piece of nickel-iron rock, but appart form that we are at a complete loss as to what it is.
We detected some movement and then it slowed down, then it sped up changed cource several times and disappeared."

"Excuse me but werent we tracking it by different means?"

"Yes but it dissapeared from everything we had at the same time.
The next event, that at first didn't appear to be related, was the incident in Iran.
The reports don't make any logical sense and at first we thought the locals were drunk or Halucinating but then our satelite sensors picked up the radiation matching the signature of the Iranian material and we were able to track it to the island and the rock.
First reports were that radiation levels at the rock were very high and of the same signature, but then the radiation dissapeared, there was no trace even in the rock itself, which didn't make any sense as even some exposure should leave some trace.
At this point we are at a loss to explain any of this."

"Didn't you examine the rock to find out what might be inside?"

"Thats the other thing we can't explain, any attempt to scan the rock would only give us the surface shape.
Radar, seismographs, nothing we tried gave us any internal structure, it's as if there is nothing inside.
We couldn't even drill into the rock or penetrate the surface with anything we had to use.
Well General that's about all I can tell you."

"Gentlemen I'm sure you can see the problem here, we need to know what is or was inside that rock, and where is that missing nuclear material?"

"Excuse me but can't we track the material with our satelite sensors?"

"Thats just it, the material seems to have just disapeared, like that piece of the asteroid."

Well things are settling down a little bit, there are still a few scientists here examining the rock, and they say I can go back and explore it again. There was a glitch in their instruments and it really wasn't radioactive at all. Still it's curious that they have all this equipment set up as if they were monitoring the rock for something.

I think I'll just settle down and have a drink, the radio is much better now, they have an antenna set up and it seems to be picking up a lot more signals and somehow my reception is better so I get a lot more news, - when I want it. Nothing on the middle east, funny but you'd think something like that would stir things up for a long time. And there was something odd, a report about other canisters of radioactive material being stolen and then nothing, like a news blackout or something. I'll just wait a bit, something will happen.
