Subject: Dinosaurs?
My 6 year grandson asked this question, "What were Dinosaurs alive for?", for those who don't speak child, Why did dinosaurs exist, what was the purpose of 140 million years of these creatures being alive? There are certainly trivial answeres such as 'To give our scientists something to discover', or more realisticly 'so we would have birds to sing for us', but I was hoping for a more meaningful answer that I could put into terms he could understand.

As a matter of fact, I have wondered with a childlike curiosity, when I was a child and I still wonder at times that we humans are just another life form with a very recent origin when compared to that of Dinosaurs. This lessens my ego of being a human being so to say. laughing

But the million dollar question is 'Purpose of existence'. What was the purpose of existence of dinosaurs? What was the purpose of existence of any other species? What is the purpose of existence of our species?

[ When I was as young as your grandson is now: I used to ask my elders: "What was there when nothing was there?" or "What was the beginning of the beginning"?--none ever satisfied me with his/her answers]

There is no inherent purpose of existence. 'Purpose' is human mind's creation. I do not think that any dinosaur ever thought about the purpose or any cow ever purposefully purports to be a cow. sticking out tongue

In other words--I blabbered but I could not come-up with a meaningful answer to tell your grandson; perhaps Henry could, because, his nephew also asks him similar questions! wink

According to my nephew: dinos existed for the same reason 'he' (and his uncle) exist: to ROAR! and to EAT!

Sound good to me... nod

L.O.L. You will find, if you have children or grandchildren, that this will be an occupational hazard. Blabbering happens a lot when they start asking questions, Why do you think I posted this question? Lickily I had the presence of mind to tell him I would think about it and answer him later.

I'm guessing you don't have children, because that would lead to an 'endless loop'.

'Why', 'Why not', 'But why', 'Because', 'Why', 'Just because', 'Why', etc. Kids are endless questions.

Just wait, someday, maybe, you'll be "paying for your raising."

Remember 'Insanity is heritary, you get it from your kids'.

Yes, actually he is very smart and if I put it the right way he will not only accept it he will understand it. That's why I want to have the best possable answer.

Not for us, for themselves. Just as the beauty of a flower is not for us, or even for the bees, but for the sheer exuberance of being, even if it is never seen.

Purposes have to end somewhere, with something that justifies itself.

The same answer could be given for those who ask why did God create all the rest of the universe, 'Just for the fun of it'.
