Subject: Writing Again
A fellow has arrived back in his home country of the U.S. after a 5 month stint in England.

The trip has done him some good. His soul has opened up and stretched, just a little. He has learned the comforts of love in a close friendship. He has gained new confidence in life.

(Un)fortunately it coincides with the neutralization (a slow changing) of his ash-tinted spectacles for viewing the world, the depressive style with an tendency to mental intoxication. The pleasures of playing with language have thus lessened. Where it (language) lacks purpose it still smothers with aesthetic excesses in a dull way. It reflects the over fullness and variety of possible worlds.

Also diminished, the vibrating heart string of wonder and awe.

Why should wonder diminish? Perhaps it is the over-consumption of electronic media.

The mind has made itself up, reinforced by more concrete frames. He'd rather be doing than thinking. He longs for momentum, to flow outside, to feel material in his hands, to build himself something real and lasting.

Wonder diminishes with movement towards rigidity. Attunement or integration brings energy and flow. In other words, the only way to the middle is through.

A loss of wonder is perhaps too radical a statement. There must be some natural measure of rigidity as we age. Practical matters, the realm of what is concretely possible, are gaining interest over abstractions of language and media chatter.

I can't watch television anymore. It's so harsh and depressing, whether one is watching news, drama or comedy.

You'll have to forgive me for being focused on integration, I'm currently reading a book about it. The author of this book suggests that we have a natural tendency to move towards integration, rather than a natural momentum towards either extreme of rigidity or chaos. For instance, rigidity can be an early [subconscious] strategy which wanes with age and circumstances.

In any case, or in all cases, the suggested method to move towards integration is insight or mindfulness practice. To study the self is to forget the self and develop the space to be enlightened by ten thousand things. I'm paraphrasing of course.
