Subject: Entitled to your opinion?
We've had some discussion previously on what qualifies something as a fact. Came across this link today, in which the author, JP Moore, states:

"Johnston illustrated the fact that not everyone is entitled to an opinion..."

Aside from the problem calling this thing a fact which actually is not, I think it raises an interesting question of whether people truly are, or should be, entitled to any opinion.

Any thoughts?

A related question: Is saying that so-and-so is entitled to his or her opinion the same as condoning that particular opinion? For example, Mary says "Children deserve to be abused." Then Bob says, "Well everyone is entitled to their opinion." Can it be taken to mean that Bob condones the abuse of children?

It comes down to a question of rights and responsabilities, everyone has the right to their own opinion, but with the responsability to base that opinion on the truth as best they can know it.

The only thing entitling any one to his or her opinion is his or her capacity to formulate one.

It doesn't matter if that opinion is informed or not (the exactness of the formulation is irrelevant).

Of course, formulating and holding an opinion obligates no one else to anything: that is, Mary may say, "Children deserve to be abused." So what? I'm not obligated to listen to her, counter her, argue with her...my only obligation (as far as I can see) is the self-imposed one of protecting my nephew from her (should she choose to act on the opinion of hers).
