Try taking the poll in the middle of the column ("The Naked Truth"). I found the results rather astonishing.

Is this really the kind of thing a politician should lose his job over? Any thoughts?

As incredibly irresponsible (and stupid) as it was, I still don't think it should cause them to resign from their jobs. Politicians are only human (just like the rest of us) and human beings are known for their mistakes.

If nude pics were ever taken of me and shown to the public... hell yea it would be embarrassing... but it wouldn't be something to stop me from going to college nor would it be enough to make me look for a new job. Stuff like that will follow you where ever you go, so there's no point in running from it.

And as for the poll, the choices were ridiculously worded. I ended choosing "I'm not sure," Because the law was never something that crossed my mind. Otherwise I would have chosen 'No'.

People are crazy.

It's not the 'bad behavior' that damns the politician but the lies he or she tells to cover that 'bad behavior'.

Tommy Cocksman (a congressman from the Land of Nod) twits nekkid pics to admirers (in and of itself not illegal...you can argue the morality/ethics, but not the legality) and the press gets a'hold of that information.

If Tommy says, 'yeah, I did it...so what?' he may still lose his job in the next election, but not one can point a finger and accuse him of dishonesty.

If Tommy (literally caught with his pants down) lies his ass off (to preserve his ass), then every one and his mother can and will point at Tommy screeching, 'Liar! Liar! Pants on fire!'

If Tommy lies to cover his ass, what else will Tommy lie about during the execution of his duties as a congressman?

It's the 'honesty', not the 'bad behavior', I think, that need scrutinizing.

the congressman mentioned in the above article didn't lie about it, he's been separated from his wife for two years and was corresponding with a woman online and exchanging nudie pics on his own time, mind you, not on government devices. turns out it was a setup by a political opponent. i don't see how he didn't anything wrong. foolish, sure, a bit naive, perhaps, but not something he should lose his job over.

Well, Magazzu didn't lose his job, he resigned.

Seems to me: he's being preemptive, possibly because other, more sleazy, crap has yet to be disclosed by that 'opponent' (and with Magazzu's resignation, won't be disclosed).

I'm just guessing, of course, but I think it makes sense. Why else would he resign?

Again: embarrassment aside, what Magazzu did is not illegal, so why resign?

exactly. weird, right? but look at the poll, though. 80% of people surveyed said they thought what he did was "disgusting". seriously? what's disgusting about it?

your theory about nipping the disclosure of more sleaze could be right...

"80% of people surveyed said they thought what he did was "disgusting"."

If this truly motivated Magazzu to resign, then he's way too thin-skinned.

More and more: I'm thinking he left 'cause that was the price to protect whatever is left of his 'good name' (and, maybe, avoid criminal charges). Lord knows what 'sin' he's guilty of... wink
