Subject: Amputation fetish
So, I'm told that there is this fetish that some people have that has to do with getting an amputation. And that it is apparently the source of some controversy. Should a person be able to just go to doctor's office and say, "Hey, could you please amputate my leg?" even though there is no reason of medical necessity to do so? If you were a doctor and were asked by someone to do so to satisfy their fetish, would you?

Any thoughts?

A person should do to his or her flesh what he or she likes, up to, and including, something as dumb as amputating a perfectly good limb.

But the day such a person comes to me and asks for (demands) cash to live (because what he or she did willingly renders him or her unemployable or crippled) I will tell that person to go fuck him- or her-self.

If I were a doctor; I would refuse the case from the start, recommending the person have his or her head examined.

I'm not a doctor but my understanding is that it would be a violation of the Hippocratic Oath to amputate someone's limbs unnecessarily. I certainly wouldn't do it and I don't think anyone should have a "right" (legally) to compel their physician to perform such a procedure.

In the past I've read some articles about this fetish, apotemnophilia, and "body integrity identity disorder" and it's amazing the lengths some people go to in their efforts to remove their limbs. Since no doctor will perform the surgery, they will often attempt the amputation themselves! The risks are great and they often have to invent ways not only to sever their limbs but also to ensure that they will be discovered if they loose consciousness and start to bleed to death.

I think the current medical opinion is that this fetish is caused by and classified as a neurological disorder. So Henry's comment about them needing their head examined is probably the correct answer.
