In your mind is the image of two people. One of them is smiling, one is frowning. The smiling person has their hand on the frowning person's back. Without knowing anything else about these people, what is the first thought, if any, that crosses your mind about them or their situation?

Smiley is about to visit violence on Frowny.

Frowny deserves everything Smiley throws at him (and Frowny knows it).

The smile is in anticipation of the great joy Smiley is about to experience stomping Frowny.

The frown is in anticipation of receiving a well-deserved (but not liked) thumping.

How sick am I, Doctor?

lol about as sick as i am. my thoughts were similar. actually, i interpreted malice on smiley's part, i don't know that frowny actually deserves it, although maybe believes so. but my first thought was just that frowny is sad in general.

would love to hear more responses though, will offer interpretations thereafter. thumb up

Frowny is a close pal of smiley and calm smiley has told him a truth about life. Frowny is disappointed by the revelation but the wise, gentle and composed smiley has his support to back Frowny up and realizes that soon Frowny will realize that there is no use resisting ‘what is’.

the thought experiment was inspired by this image i came across yesterday:

of course, since the two bananas appear to be snuggling in bed, that puts a bit of different context on it. maybe they're meant to be lovers? i don't know. but the most thought provoking part of the image, i think, is in their expressions. why does one smile and one frown? this is not the way we usually see things happening. i found myself interpreting that the smiling banana was actually *happy* that the sad banana was frowning - thus the interpretation of malice. and then i began to wonder why i would come to such a conclusion. so here i am, posing it in the form of a thought experiment.

i could definitely see your interpretation applying to this banana picture, lol. maybe not in terms of physical violence, but at least emotional violence. maybe it comes of being divorced twice. sisyphus

freud might posit any number of theories related to memories of childhood abuse now transformed into projections of malice. as a victim of childhood abuse, that could certainly be the case in my interpretation. but i really think it's much more simple than that. if this picture is truly to be interpreted in a benevolent manner, we can only assume that the smiling banana is completely oblivious to the frowning banana's pain. either out of ignorance, or out of deliberate ignorance. would you agree?

a kind interpretation hug but unfortunately, i've found this kind of behavior from the smilies of the world, such as you describe, is often misinterpreted by the frownies as a form of smug arrogance. i only say this having been a frowny myself in the situation you describe, as well as been on the other side, as a smiley trying to cheer up a frowny. the good intention is rarely well received if it's done only while wearing a smile. i think now, in retrospect, that it's because the frowny cannot see by your expression that you truly sympathize.

i heard a saying not too long ago, "a person who has never been hungry can never truly sympathize with one who is starving." (or something like that, i don't remember the exact words.) i was reminded of the saying while pondering this image. i think that when a frowning person sees someone who knows that they're sad but who smiles anyway, i think it's only natural for them to assume that the other doesn't really understand.

now, it may be the case that smiley really *does* understand. and maybe smiley is smiling in the knowledge that frowny will get through it and will find peace of mind eventually. but it's been my experience that the smiling is rarely of any comfort to frowny. i think we can assume by the gesture of putting one's hand on another that comfort is what is intended. but if comforting is to be effective, i think that first empathy has to be established, which involves expressing if not sadness, then at least concern.

here are some miscellaneous pics i found on google to reiterate this thought.

by the way thinker, i don't mean to be critical of your interpretation, i think it's a thoughtful way of interpreting it. just sharing some reflections on things i've learned, that were inspired by seeing this banana image yesterday. here's another pic i just found that probably goes more along with what you had in mind:

although i will hold to the assertion that the scenario in this particular pic started first with an expression of concern from the girl on the left! then as the atmosphere lightened, only then it became a smile in the sort of "chin up, you'll get through this" kind of way.

heartlib

p.s. if anyone else has thoughts or possible interpretations to share, please do! curious!

The first idea that popped into my head was malice, the second was more along the lines of what Thinker wrote. smiling face
