Subject: one wish
Suppose you come across a lamp or ring and -- upon rubbing the lamp or ring (perhaps to clear away a little schmutz) -- find yourself face to face with a Jinn. Let's say this Jinn offers you one wish. Let's say, as the Jinn explains, you can wish for ANYTHING (literally ANYTHING). The Jinn says there are no strictures or restraints on the wish except that you only get one, and -- once granted -- the wish cannot be 'taken back'.

With the above as your starting point:

Do you make that irrevocable wish?

If so: what do you wish for?

If not: why not?

I will not make wish.

Reason: I have no dream 'wishes' ; no 'grand goals'. If I ever encounter such a genie and it seemed to be a real 'genius'; I might like to have a discussion where I will put some Philosophical questions to it, having a nice conversation over a coffee. Thats it.

"I might like to have a discussion where I will put some Philosophical questions to it, having a nice conversation over a coffee."

And the Jinn -- being the non-nonsense, but tricksy, bastard he is -- might say, "Your wish is my command."

wink

"what about you henry?"

I think I would wish that ever man, woman, and child alive on the whole of the planet would, for 24 hours, see themselves, the world, and themselves 'in' the world as I see myself, the world, and myself 'in' the world.

Some folks would go fucking nuts and off themselves...some would welcome the stark, unvarnished, perspective...some exceedingly small number wouldn't notice any difference at all (already being natural anarchists, my view wouldn't shock or surprise any of those).

At the end of the 24 hours: the compulsion/perspective would leave, but the memory would remain.

My little gift to the world... wink

It occurs to me: some folks (rather than being horrified, satisfied, or not noticing) might chalk up the experience to indigestion and forget the event ever happened... whatever

Tons and tons of money ($200,000,000) with a absolutely legitimate record for having acquired it lawfully. Just so I'm not burned by the genie.

shaking head

Hope that isn't too pedestrian of a wish.

interesting, curious to know how you imagine it would affect your own experience of the world thereafter

Hadn't really thought about it.

I take the opportunity of the Jinn as a chance to play a grand 'joke' on the world-at-large: the 'pay off' (for me) is the 'horror' or 'satisfaction' folks would experience.

I mean: I'd be sipping my coffee and smoking and watching various persons unravel and others have the 'light bulb' go off over the head.

Can't really see (nor am I much interested in) any 'profit' beyond that.

Thought experiments are very valuable. They have a quality of novels and movies, on the front of entertainment and when they’re accompanied with amusing questions, they help us bring out some very subtle and subconscious parts of our psyches. Thought experiments are very Socratic in nature. A really good tool for increasing our perceptiveness!
