Subject: Goal-driven?
This topic is inspired in part by Thinker's post in the "god of war" thread:

Thinker wrote:
Without having any goal or mission whatsover I live day to day and meanwhile I keep on getting objectives which I try to meet as if playing a game; nothing however, is a must and it never is!

Also inspired by the following article on "Obliquity":

(by the way, Thinker, yours seems a very taoist approach - is it?)

To everyone: I was curious to know some of your goals in life, if you don't mind sharing. And more interested to know whether you feel like having goals and being able to achieve them makes a big difference for you, or do you feel like you could do without goal altogether?

Any thoughts?

'Tao Te Ching' is one of my favorite books and I regard Laozi as one of the wisest human beings who ever walked on earth, still, to suggest that I am a follower of Taoism will again be tying me to an 'ism' or religion, which will not be liked by Henry laughing

Whenever I get a new acquaintance, I ask following questions, almost always :

1. Would you please mind me telling your goals in life?
2. Would you please mind me telling about your hobbies?

There is no replacement to spending time with persons and involving in Socratic dialogue if possible, still, if anyone answers truthfully to above two questions, it might tell a lot about him/her.

"...which will not be liked by Henry"

Like 'that' matters... wink

My goals: Preservation of my nephew; preservation of myself.

Anything and everything I 'do' is in support of these twin goals.

...and...

I have no hobbies...I have diversions (at best), distractions (at worst); and just plain 'living' most of the time.

ah, well the approach to goals may be called taoist even if you yourself may not wink

as for me, i have a few goals. artistically, i would like to produce a feature film some day. also would like to publish a book that i'm working on, a novel. if i manage to accomplish at least those 2 things before i die, i'll be thrilled.

it's also my goal to be able to afford a couple of nice houses, one for myself, and one for my mom to live out her remaining years rather than in a facility. not bent on buying; renting is fine. and it doesn't need to be a mansion either, just a place with a nice backyard where i can keep pets and have plenty of space for my various projects.
