Subject: Why there's a Covert Couch
As most of the regulars here know, I've long kept a fairly strict policy of moderation. No ad hominem, no name calling, etc and so on (click here for a full list). I had in mind to create an environment where, in the spirit of exploration and quality debate, people could show they were capable of analyzing - and, if called for, attacking - points of argument, not each other. I intend to adhere to this standard. Ad hominem is truly a weak form of debate. And while name-calling and trading insults often seems innocuous enough among good friends, it's been my experience over the years that it's not always well received, especially in an environment such as this, where we have only text and a few emoticons to convey all the subtleties of emotion that you normally read in a person's face. So. The open categories here are not the place for that.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I should let things go a little more - more than this, even. I'm not convinced. There was some talk a while back about having an unmoderated section of The Couch, and at that time, I wasn't quite ready to give it a try. Now I am. While it will still be possible to get banned from this members-only section (and hence from the whole forum), I will not actually moderate any posts here. Banning will only happen if I and at least 2 other members agree on it. (Or if you have already been banned from the open forum.) Meanwhile, it's a place where you can take your disagreements if you feel like coming off with the gloves for whatever reason, and want to dish it out where other members can keep up with it and comment on it. Will this make the Couch a better place? I don't know. We'll see how it goes.

Another advantage (or disadvantage) to posting to the members-only section is that your posts will not show up in the search engines. Something to keep in mind.

Enjoy,
=)Lib

Things are well my friend. We have a 4-month old son now, and he's both happy and healthy. Still working, drawing, hiking and being a family man. In general couldn't be better!

How are you? And your wife? Give her a long distance "hello" from me!

I am new here, but I just wanted to thank the site administrators for maintaining this forum - I really miss the "good old days" when quality discussions like these were more common on the internet.

So thank you very much and I look forward to discussing with you all. smiling face
