I view all religion as Multilevel Group Selection. The need to group, especially when stakes are high, may indeed be from an inner driving evolutionary force. It's an interesting behavior.

All our belief systems are independent of objective reality; that's why we could believe for centuries that the earth was flat and the sun revolved around the earth. But not everyone in the world held that belief at that time. And, it did not matter that objective reality did not match up well to the various belief systems about the Earth or its place in the universe. Belief systems are also independent of each other. I don't see a problem with diametrically opposed belief systems co-existing. In fact, I would argue that this is the norm of the human condition.
