my favorites are "ufo" and "boards" - great composition. and there's something inexplicably deeply satisfying about the rocks in "do not use". i wish i was big enough to put one of them in my pocket.

Giants overheat and have problems with blood circulation. But they are good for playing pro basket ball, staring in movie roles, and getting stuff out of short trees and high shelves.

I like pictures of nature with industrial wastes in them. Vally Rocks, seems to show a pile of trash, or an old foundation, on the side of the road below.

Makes me want to go out and shoot some photos.

I love the lighting in oostenrijk009. Nice glow and mysterious shadows. Is that smoke or clouds?

As for lib's, "clearlake state park" looks like quite a naming joke. :p Makes it interestingly difficult to tell at first whether it's water or land. And "somewhere off of hwy 280" illustrates the good side of fog nicely... I want to get a picture sometime when the fog is rolling along the hills in the distance, somehow the few days it's been like that I've forgotten.

New foundation actually. I like Study in Contrasts for the port-a-poty and trash pile.

I have a nice trash pile in nature down the street that I took some photos of yesterday, focusing on newspapers for some reason: The Mountain Democrat, Wilma (gives the odd impression that huricane winds blew the paper into that position)

Hi Paul,

Excellent pics. I like the way that you frame what is there rather than idealising things. I agree that including industrial wasteland and other detritus is the way to go. That is not to say that a beautiful natural view doesn't have value, but it is only a part of what is around us in the world.

Good stuff.

Cheers, e

Impressive use of plastic silverware, but it looks like it's being cruely tortured hanging there.

I notice most of my links from last year were dead, so I've replaced them with a new bunch of photos. I really like "Trickle of Color" but I wish I had the trickle centered at the base (oh well, I'll just have to wait another 10 years for the next snowstorm).

i've just started classes this week at an online college, and your sculpture in its pictured pose seems a most fitting mascot for matriculation. i love that it's made with eating utensils, the symbolism tickles me.

'trickle of color' is friggin' awesome. i also love 'branches'. snow is so pretty.

other favorites:
rainy sunset (i love the contrast and variety in textures)
tahoe water (gives me vertigo)
dock & american river (beautiful composition)

it took me a minute to figure out what the arrow was in "arrow". i was thinking, embarcad... arrow? lol! love that sculpture.

speaking of embarcadero, here's one i took last weekend.

I wonder if they get a lot of accidents due to sign-induced bouts of utter confusion taking people's attention off the road. Luckily I've never been there.

Hi folks,

This thread has inspired me to upgrade my little 'point and shoot' for a Nikon SLR. Now I'll have to learn how to use it!

I'm really interested in the light in all the photos here, particularly the way light changes in different parts of the world. Here in the UK the light is kind of watery, and the sky never gets to a deep blue. We do a good line in fog and grey skies, and you need to get half way down through France before that feeling changes.

When I was a kid I had a little 'viewmaster' slide viewer and the photos on it were always so perfect, and the sun was always shining. Paul, some of your photos remind me of that time.

Cheers, e smiling face

been doing a lot of abstraction work on my websites lately, was in the mood for a change. something a little less literal, a little more tropical. (tropical as in trope-like)

A few from Monday here, in celebration of the probably-last snow of the season. On a warm day just after snow the ground is kind of like a little fog machine. No matter how many times I drive by it, I still love the shape of this hill (the one on the right). I've always felt these rocks are nicely textured. Finally, partly cloudy days always make nice shadows.

Didn't notice it when I was there, but it looks like it might be indicating the Diablo Scenic Boulevard turn where I got confused and ended up making an illegal right on the way back. Or it could just be a question mark with a misplaced dot.

Having seen some weird road signs in my country, I would definitely get lost with those, which I have seen over here. I better use my intuition and maybe it will lead me to my destination.
