Subject: The Ancients.
TAO TE CHING-62

The Way is the fate of men,
The treasure of the saint,
And the refuge of the sinner.

Fine words are often borrowed,
And great deeds are often appropriated;
Therefore, when a man falls, do not abandon him,
And when a man gains power, do not honor him;
Only remain impartial and show him the Way.

Why should someone appreciate the Way?
The ancients said, "By it, those who seek may easily find,
And those who regret may easily absolve"
So it is the most precious gift.

TAO TE CHING-65

The ancients did not seek to rule people with knowledge,
But to help them become natural.
It is difficult for knowledgeable people to become natural.

To use law to control a nation weakens the nation.
But to use nature to control a nation strengthens the nation.

Understanding these two paths is understanding subtlety;
Subtlety runs deep, ranges wide,
Resolves confusion and preserves peace.

Who are the ancients? Any ideas?

i've always taken it to mean the people's ancestors. it could refer to more primitive cultures, or it could even refer to perceptions of deity.

what are your thoughts thinker?

Your remarks are pertinent. Why I had this curiosity, about the ancients? It was so because--Tao Te Ching, was written by either Laozi or by some Taoist thinkers following him, in the centuries after Laozi died. In my humble opinion, there is none of the eastern sages in the history of last four thousand years, who has, the degree of wisdom, insight, enlightenment and simplicity to offer as Laozi(under the impression that Tao-Te-Ching was his creation).

So if Laozi was refering to the ancients then it means that he was referring to some wise sages who came prior to him, but we have, next to null evidence for the same.

The main problem with the great sages is--whatever they say is interpreted by those who are not as perceptive as the sages are and more and more fog of doubt and confusion evolves around the teachings once they are dead. Whenever reading the teachings of Buddha for example-I do not assume that I am reading his words, but rather the interpretations and commentories by later scholars on Buddha, who need not be as enlightened as Buddha was.

For a christian.the ancients are people like noah . Abraham jacob and so.on.. the difference between.them and other so called ancients and great sages is that they were chosen by god and raised up by the lord and not by men.
