Subject: Why The Couch?
Hello my thinking pro's...
[Please paradon my language, am new to this and new to addressing wiser people]
I was going through the discussions, theories, rants, ramblings and some *debates*... and I never thought philosophy can be this fun thumb up

But then, I have this query bugging me, forgive me admins. When we are thinking or planning or wondering what should and where should the world be heading [not beheadingpeace], is a couch, which is known for a lazy nap, better place?

You can never see debates happening on couches, did you?

So why not we talk about actions?

[Consider this as an amature post on a mature topic by unqualified thiker]

Why not? When you are comfortable on your couch, you will have, a lot of alpha waves, suggestive of deep meditation; coming out of your ‘self’ and then, you will come with many creative ideas; to save your world(or our world!)!

You can never see debates happening on couches, did you?

Indeed. We are not here to debate(though, it is not bad to have debates about some views at times) but rather to share our ideas. Moreover, we have our art galleries, where you can not only showcase your artistic creations, but also, may enjoy viewing(may be appreciating too!) that of, other fellow interlocutors/participants/friends.

Thank you.

Philosophy as per some great philosopher is an activity of clarification (of thoughts), and more so, of critique (of language).

I conceived from this thought that the philosophy is clearing thoughts via debates which finally give reasons to believe the unseen truth.

Once again thank you for sharing the couch!

Wittegenstein said so methinks. He also said that "Philosophers, who do not participate into the discussions(debates?) are like boxers who do not participate into the boxing."

Whether it is debate or discussion, which increases clarity of thought process- may well be a moot point, still, free-association or describing your ideas works best with a live listener, debator or interlocutor, which in turn, reinforces more and more of your perceptiveness. smiling face

Thank you Thinker13.

Well then before this goes off topic, I wanted to confirm, why [don't blame me, am curious!] this has to be a couch?

I have never seen a philosopher in a photograph/biography thinking or discussing while sitting on a couch! Rather some place else, like a chair.

A more thinking spot would be a Chair by the Window[My vivid imagination], where your thoughts will be inwardly outward as you long towards the distant spaces.[IMHO]

As I have learnt from my age, when looking at distances helps you to stabilize yourself more than you are willing to do.

That exactly is my point. Why, when we can have discuss the ideas by being active, should we take a more comfortable stance. Comfort imports a fatigue which is undeniable.

Why the Couch?

P.S: I am not against the naming convention followed or is being used, I am just curious to know what exactly is the theme?

Sorry. Only lib may throw some light on the history.

Perfectly so. We are not all ‘Philosophers’ here.

Good suggestion.

Couches are awesome! It's where opinions are formed, where the world is watched through newspapers and tv, where family debates fly high, where nights come of age and where babies are made. All that in the protected atmosphere of your cosy grandmother's couch. It's where we relax and let our mind go free. Much more productive than the parliament. That's why the secret world leaders are always sitting in a dark, secluded room with a couch. Only our couch is better: It fits more people.

Hello N1y0g1, and welcome to the couch.

You might take notice of the tagline, "Get comfortable. Realize the power of expression."

I take this to mean that the couch primarily values expression. In my experience of the couch this value seem to hold true, to the extent that expression may have more value than reason on this particular couch. So please, relax, and express yourself. zen

thumb up

thanks thinker & praxis too for sharing your couch perceptions! yes, expression, meditation, contemplation, art & philosophy are some things you may find here. the name and concept for the forum was inspired by something one of our members (basta) said once: "The world is our TV. Let us just be entertained and chat during commercials."

another welcome to you n1y0g1 smiling face

Quite simply, the couch represents Paradise.

The Holy Quraan (52), "The Mount" wrote:

As to the Righteous, they will be in Gardens, and in Happiness,-

Enjoying the (Bliss) which their Lord hath bestowed on them, and their Lord shall deliver them from the Chastisement of the Fire.

(To them will be saidsmiling face "Eat and drink ye, with profit and health, because of your (good) deeds."

They will recline (with ease) upon couches arranged in ranks; and We shall wed them to Maidens, with beautiful big and lustrous eyes.
