Neo Cinema: Sleep as Capital Punishment and Entertainment

The masses go to the movies
To watch a caste of heros, antiheros, villains and sidekicks
Vaulting over and running through
The physical demands of absurd plot twists
With fast and fearsome machines.

But, in this century, of a close future
The characters of the now digital platinum screen
Have been integrated with
A real
Human (with real human pain)

A man hangs upside down
In a transparant tube, for all to see, paralyzed in R.E.M sleep
Integrated into the virtual world of the movie

He feels the pressure of hundreds of
dead eyes
These theater goers
Watching the happenstance of his strange adventure, his own dream
Seething with the anticipations of ends

He is
As was once actually history
A gladiator of the ring

Pushed on to kill incoming predators
By the cheering avatars of audience
Their silent eyes,
Given new bodies and voices

They're crying out,
Watching themselves,
Cheer on the fighter

Euphoric
Seething
Sweating

The dreamer is the fighter
The sleeper is the victim
The watchers are immersed in the fearfully empty blasts
This poor hero's fight and flight existence

Transcribe his impending death
And diffuse its foreplay unto us
Let us watch the sleeping man
Die in pain
Or convulse in the wet dream
Of victory

...

I disagree. This piece speaks. It has something to profound to say, which is, all in all, a pretty rare quality. I havn't completely figured it out yet, but it's good.

Execution used to be quite a spectacle for the public (like in Braveheart).

We see fake, theatrical plays of all kinds of execution and other hardships but they are so far removed from reality.

The poem just addresses a fusion a moving picture with the nervous system of a real sleeping person. As theater goers watch, someone's dream is played out in a theater with acutal emotional consequences felt by the dreamer (pains, pleasures, the possible agony of death).

It's as if someone is hooked into the Matrix but the rest of us are just watching what they are doing in the Matrix. Some technology encloses the dreamer into a narrative structure (designed dream that plays out like a movie).
