Why would you give Grendel (me) such a thing?

To allow me to move unmolested in the mead hall...a bad idea, Liberty.

I hate admit it, but: one of the more pleasant things abut the couch is your reining in of the monsters.

You strike a balance...you ought to stick to it.

Even if one slice of the couch were left un-moderated, I think the place as a whole would be adulterated.

But: if you insist on the folly, make it probationary. Wield a big stick...watch me so I don't kill, kill, again!

Now: how about them apples?

cool, thanks for your feedback henry. i've been on the fence about this, that's why i thought i'd open it up to get some thoughts on it. maybe i'll consider a short trial period. on the one hand, i'd rather not. i don't like the idea of name-calling, which has thus far been the most consistent violation of any of the rules around here. so it might be a short-lived trial in any case. on the other hand, i think change is good, and i wonder if it's good to have an area of the forum that's a little more relaxed.

Speaking only for me: if you opt for the trial and, say, the absent communitarian should return, or, say, Yahweh should evidence what I believe to be hypocrisy, or, say, Nihil just grates on my nerves, all hell is liable to break loose.

Again: as much as I hate to admit it, your moderation makes for a pleasant place.

Loosen your iron fist at your own peril.

Can I exercise self-control?

Certainly.

Will I exercise self-control if you remove restraints from dust bunnies?

I think not.

I'm just being up-front about this.

"But, Henry, why would you do such a thing? Why would you intentionally piss on things?"

As the scorpion told the dying toad: It's my nature...*shrug*

Unmoderated = impolite = friction = squabbling.

I prefer a moderated forum as it saves me from myself. wink

very good then, i will count this as 3 in favor of moderated, including myself. so unless we have 4 who speak up in favor of unmoderated, we'll leave things as they are. otherwise i'll consider a trial period. thanks guys!

I support Liberty in all its forms, more freedom is good. Unmoderated is an excellent way to go.

However, what is the purpose of a 'trial' period, really. It means that the forum will be 'unmoderated but monitored' which is really not unmoderated. I think if you go with an unmoderated section just do it, and change only if there are complaints of a serious nature.

However, I would recommend making a new forum for this, something like a 'Rant Room', which other forums have.

If folks want to squabble, let em. And if any minor offenses marr some other post or thread, banish em to the Rant Room. That wouldve been a good place to place the whole Xanthos dialogue from a while back. Those things loose steam after a while.

a trial period would mean that the trial period would end if it was clearly causing some interference in other areas of the forum.

The dust bunnies have almost no need for moderating, but it might be good to keep a stick behind the door.

A suggestion: instead of removing restraints from dust bunnies, why not create a 'rant room', a sub-forum where one had to sign in 'to' the rant room to access it?

In other words: we all have to sign in to the couch to participate. With the rant room: one would have to sign in a second time to access that sub-forum.

It could be a place guests couldn't access...filth laundry could be kept semi-private...and if it becomes a hassle to the rest of the forum, Liberty can simply delete that sub-forum.

Is this something you can, and are willing to do, liberty?

I can support a kind of cloister wherein I could eat Danes without an overt audience...

after having had to delete three posts for name-calling and ad hominem since starting this thread, it's becoming clear to me now that this is a bad idea. i see no reason to have my bandwidth allowance eaten up with people's sadomasochistic need to smack each other around. if you guys need a rant room you can go somewhere else.

Other than your intuitive perception of 'interference',it seems to me,almost incomprehensible to know how that happens.smiling face

Thank you.

an example of "interference" is when people apparently are unable to distinguish or respect where the specific boundaries have been set, and begin treating the entire forum as an unmoderated environment. it seems pretty clear to me from having three separate instances of ad hominem, just since starting this thread, and not just in the dust bunnies forum, that the boundary issue is already going to be a problem.
