Subject: Battle of the Trees
Here's the Celtic basis of this poem: "The brothers Amaethon and Gwydion fought The battle of the trees against Arawn, King of Annwfn (the Underworld). A white roebuck, a plover, and a greyhound pup escaped from Annwfn: Amaethon caught them and refused to give them back, so Arawn came after him. Gwydion made the trees fight on his side. . ."

Battle of the Trees

Consider trees,
rubbing their backs against a ledge,
conversing in treble voices--
their woody clatter, tidelike words,
each leaf scanning streaked darkness.

Imagine them taloned, narrow, dark:
groves of trees march on torn roots,
pine turned grey, oak berserking.

Then the stampede of trees
and boulders jumping in their places.
Roots harrow turf.
Wee animals streak to burrows.
Dispersed owls wheel, amazed, aslant.

my favorite part is

"conversing in treble voices--
their woody clatter"

i like the rhythm of it, it makes me want to say it out loud, more than once.

i love the scene in the movie "prince caspian" when the trees join the battle, they're such awe-inspiring creatures. they're the tallest and oldest living things, did you know?

it's lovely zum clap

Well done !

Reminds me of one of the brilliant, if horrifying books by Bridget Wood. The one about the wizards of Amaranth who are saved from the hells by a forest of trees who wake up from their magical slumber. Not sure which one it was... 'Sorceress', I think. (if you like celtic horror/fantasy, go for it)

Trees are, like most living things, vicious killers.

Indeed. In spite of that they are most important 'ecologically' and are one of the oldest habitats of planet. All human intelligence has done is to perniciously take over everywhere.
