why and how was that entire thread removed? Other people had posted there, not just Havohej...

hi MM,

anyone who's the creator of a thread is at liberty to delete it by deleting the opening post, which is fine by me. i believe members should be able to delete their own posts.

Hav is funny about that. He did it once before I think, even nullifying his membership only to come back under a different name. Does this mean he will come back?

I hope so. I also remember he came back.

Lib: I'm perfectly ok with it that people can delete their own posts. It's a kind of sad, though, that all those other posts had to go as well. Not everything in a thread belongs to the one who started it.

i feel sad about it too as i do about any loss. but i also respect whatever reasons havohej may have had for needing to delete his posts. and i hope he comes back too sometime, whenever he's ready.

it just doesn't make sense to me to keep a thread open when the opening post is gone. i would be surprised to learn of any forum that does. keep in mind that other members have deleted entire threads as well which have gone unnoticed or at least unremarked upon by the rest of the people here. i agree that it's a bummer, but i accept it on principle. i think if a person started a topic, they should be able to remove it. it's a privilege that comes with participation.

let it make way for more cool stuff to come.

It's not fair, I can only delete three threads and the first one is just saying hi.

My Crazy Cow thread is pretty cool though, 900 views. That's got to be worth a tear or two. Nobody better piss me off!

Yes and no.

I deleted an opening post but, quite intuitively, only the opening post was deleted and not the entire thread. I did discover that the OPer can start a poll at any time though. That might come in handy one day.

It seems to leave open the question of how and why the nonsense pile was deleted.

Deleting the first post doesn't delete a thread unless there are no replies to it yet. You need to go to edit topic in the thread tools to delete a thread. With default permissions as shipped, any opening poster has this menu option to delete a thread -- though a high percentage of people never notice the option there.

You could allow people to delete their OPs while denying them the ability to delete their topics, by unchecking the "can delete topics" permission in usergroup permissions, if you want. Of course, there's a case to be made for allowing people to delete their topics... up to you.

You can also undelete a specific topic and undelete all posts not by the OP, if you feel it's warranted, though that could take a while with a long thread.

ah. thanks for the info paul.

folks, i've changed the member permissions now so that members can delete their own posts but not their own topics. for the sake of consistency and fairness to all members who have deleted their own threads before now, any threads deleted up to this point will remain deleted.

cheers,
