An interpretation of the vision of St. Redhen.

She bore witness to the exploitation of her kind at the hands and mouths of egg and breast devouring apes.

"Yes they give us food and shelter but the conditions are unfit. We roam no longer and are now packed together so tight they find it necessary to cut off our beaks so we don't injure ourselves or neighbors. This is not done out of mercy but to keep us alive so they may steal our eggs. I beseech thee to stand up and walk in dream, for that is the only space we have left. We our powerless against this brutal heartless enemy and the only thing left for us is escape into our imaginations."

"The great Maternal Fowl spoke to me in my sleep. She beckoned me to cross the road and resign in the name of hens everywhere. 'Cease thy anger,' she said, 'for this is life."

this last november we passed prop 2 in california (but its confinement regulations won't be in full effect until 2015). besides the heinous problem of animal cruelty, it's also not as healthy to eat animals farmed under such conditions. wikipedia has a lot of info on the topic in the aforementioned prop 2 link.

a poignant interpretation nihil, thank you.

it's actually a very old painting of mine, one of my first ones, from about 7 years ago. it was conceived during a long drive through bland agricultural terrain in central california, on the way to the san joaquin valley to visit family. there were big fluffy clouds in the sky, dark with rain in some distant areas, all of it a giant rorshach engaging my imagination while i was driving. when i got to my destination, i was immediately inspired to paint chickencrossing, to answer the age-old question of why the chicken crossed the road. zen

Maybe this notorious chicken was just an adrenaline junkie. Why did the human jump out of the perfectly good airplane? smiling face
