Subject: The relevance of King
Folks,

In February 1968 Martin Luther King said,

“God didn’t call America to engage in a senseless, unjust, war…and we are criminals in that war. We’ve committed more war crimes almost than any other nation in the world and I’m going to continue to say it. And we won’t stop it because of our pride and our arrogance as a nation. But God has a way of even putting nations in their place. ….(God will say) and if you don’t stop your reckless course, I’ll rise up and break the backbone of your power.”

Wright said, “God damn America”

King said, “ (God will say) I’ll rise up and break the backbone of your power.”

There is not much daylight between these statements. If Wright is to be vilified for what he said, should we vilify the memory of Martin Luther King as well?

hi e.,

i didn't know what that wright quote was referring to (or who wright was) until today, when i came across the following news article:

news.yahoo.com/s/ap/2008032...6/ap_on_el_pr/obama_pastor

"god damn america (it's in the bible, lol) for killing innocent people" is actually what wright says (the news article fails to mention wright's quotes in their proper context, which is frustrating), and i agree that he shouldn't be vilified for that remark any more than king for his.

wright also accuses the U.S. government of having invented AIDS in order to kill black people, and obama himself condemns wright for his "refusal to acknowledge progress in race relations", so i can't say i'm a fan of all wright's opinions, but he's not all wrong either.

cheers,

Lib,

I hadn't spotted the full Wright quote either. Sheesh - soundbyte politics!

What do you think is going to happen, will it get worse before the nomination?

it's controversial but obama handles it smoothly such that folks may find themselves liking obama for considering wright a mentor. have to say i do.

with gender and race issues on the line with this election and the "historical signficance" as geraldine ferraro called it, i think the race for democratic nominee will continue to be neck & neck. and i rather get the impression that obama, at least, wouldn't have it any other way. he & hillary need each other to be worthy opponents to make this race one to remember.
