serenade
may 21, 2004

she was beautiful and
she had long black hair
wavy
down to there
and she carried
a guitar
which she played
while she walked
while she sang
a most beautiful song
so sad
and beguiling
with her beautiful voice
and her eyes smiling
and wise,

serenading the sun
in the still
of an afternoon
while a little girl walked
alongside
looking up at her
with eyes
full of wonder
and a heart
full of thunder
and a mouth
full of questions

but the woman
only smiled with her eyes
while walking along
and singing her song
and in much
the same way
and on quite
the same day
the universe
sang her song
to the little girl
in me.

A few lines I like :

"Who never ate his bread in sorrow;

who never wept OR wailed thinking for morrow;

who never burnt mid might oil;

hasn't known ye O' heavenly powers!"

(actually written by Goethe,translated by Carlyle--were much admired by Oscar Wilde)
